Monday, November 19th, 2012 Focus: I have the courage to face my judgments, vengeance, anxiety, and resentments.

Our endless dream of having the courage to face our judgment, our vengeance, our anxiety, our resentments and to live with them is captured in this ancient story told to schoolchildren in India. It is the lesson of the King Cobra, who grows the largest and lives the longest.

An ordinary cobra keeps spewing venom and so becomes a feared snake. But the King Cobra doesn’t bite and waste its poison. It retains, retains, and retains its venom so very patiently, with caution, in meditation for long, long years. Until the poison somehow condenses and solidifies into a diamond. When all its venom becomes a diamond, the King Cobra spits out the jewel that living has produced and dies in bliss.

Dare we understand this as our purpose? The diamond of love waits to be crystallized in each of us.

Friday, November 16th, 2012 Focus: What can I do today to open my heart?

We are all apprentices on the continuum of love. When we step onto that path, we apprentice ourselves to animals, to each other, to nature, to the universe. We are learning to open our hearts more completely to another, whether that other is an animal, a person, a tree, or a flower.

As you integrate the lessons of unconditional love, your heart opens and one day you find you are in the flow of the universe. You look into the eyes of a cat and suddenly you feel the oneness that is always there, waiting for you, and you know with your deepest knowing that you are part of the universal whole. You know you are not alone and never will be. You know we are all connected.

We can tap into that connection simply by asking, “What can I do today to open my heart?” For the animals in your life, ask yourself, “Are there ways I can allow them to live truer to their natures? Are there things I can do to accommodate their true selves that I am not doing because it might be inconvenient for me? What can I do today to open my heart?”

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012 Focus: I seek out new experiences & new adventures.

Our habitual natural tendencies can be incredibly helpful and sensible (putting a seat belt on without thinking). But some of our habits can imprison us. They can lead to us unthinkingly processing any new incoming information according to what we know, rather than on the basis of what we are actually perceiving. Or they can lead us to do things mindlessly, without stopping to think about what we are doing.

We know that if left to its own devices the brain would have you behave in the ways you have always done. But sometimes we have to distract it from its usual ways. And you never know, you might spot new solutions to problems that haven’t appeared on your mental radar before.

Sometimes it’s good for us to do what doesn’t come naturally. How many exciting, daring or unusual adventures have you had in the past year? How many will you have in the year to come? The solution is to seek out environments in which you have no experience.’ When did you last do that?

Thursday, November 8th, 2012 Focus: I remove the “excess baggage” from my home.

Thursday, November 8th, 2012

Focus: I remove the “excess baggage” from my home.
Every possession in the home has its own vibrational quality. Everything we buy, every gift we receive and any family heirloom we inherit all contain their own particular frequencies. In an ideal world, we surround ourselves with artifacts, furniture and possessions that have either a functional use or are aesthetically pleasing to the soul. Surrounding ourselves with objects that we are not happy with, that are broken, out of date, or that we seldom use are simply taking up space.

Excess baggage in the home has the potential to slow down our chi, limit our perspective of a new bright future and, to a certain degree, connect us more with our past than with our future.

Focus: Through appreciation, I find the peace and happiness that I have been searching for.

So many people in the world don’t have one tenth of what we have. We live in 3- and 4-bedroom houses. Others live ten people to a room. We eat three meals a day and plenty of snacks in between. Others don’t have enough to keep their children from starvation. We have closets full and overflowing with clothes we don’t wear — others wear rags.

You might say, you have worked hard for all these things. This is true. But, many of us no longer enjoy our life, because we are so busy keeping up with our bills. Many of us forget to appreciate the sunshine and the birds singing because we are so stressed running from job to market to home. Many of us are so wrapped up in a “successful life” that we forget that personal success resides in inner peace, love for the people around us, and a feeling of security in our heart.

Perhaps as we become more “appreciative beings” instead of “wanting more beings” we will find the peace and happiness that we have been searching for.

Marijuana And Cancer: Scientists Find Cannabis Compound Stops Metastasis In Aggressive Cancers

9/20/2012

A pair of scientists at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco has found that a compound derived from marijuana could stop metastasis in many kinds of aggressive cancer, potentially altering the fatality of the disease forever.

“It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited,” said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery, to The Huffington Post. “We want to get started with trials as soon as possible.”

The Daily Beast first reported on the finding, which has already undergone both laboratory and animal testing, and is awaiting permission for clinical trials in humans.

Desprez, a molecular biologist, spent decades studying ID-1, the gene that causes cancer to spread. Meanwhile, fellow researcher Sean McAllister was studying the effects of Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Finally, the pair collaborated, combining CBD and cells containing high levels of ID-1 in a petri dish.

“What we found was that his Cannabidiol could essentially ‘turn off’ the ID-1,” Desprez told HuffPost. The cells stopped spreading and returned to normal.

“We likely would not have found this on our own,” he added. “That’s why collaboration is so essential to scientific discovery.”

Desprez and McAllister first published a paper about the finding in 2007. Since then, their team has found that CBD works both in the lab and in animals. And now, they’ve found even more good news.

“We started by researching breast cancer,” said Desprez. “But now we’ve found that Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers–brain, prostate–any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present.”

Desprez hopes that clinical trials will begin immediately.

“We’ve found no toxicity in the animals we’ve tested, and Cannabidiol is already used in humans for a variety of other ailments,” he said. Indeed, the compound is used to relieve anxiety and nausea, and, since it is non-psychoactive, does not cause the “high” associated with THC.

While marijuana advocates will surely praise the discovery, Desprez explained that it’s not so easy as just lighting up.

“We used injections in the animal testing and are also testing pills,” he said. “But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking.”

Furthermore, the team has started synthesizing the compound in the lab instead of using the plant in an effort to make it more potent.

“It’s a common practice,” explained Desprez. “But hopefully it will also keep us clear of any obstacles while seeking approval.”
